STUDENTS OF NIGER DELTA UNIVERSITY ARE CRYING FOR THE HIGH RATE OF FEES

The student community of Niger Delta University (NDU) held a congress on Wednesday 11th April 2018, in respect of the high amount of fees they are paying (the inflation of fees in the school). Comrade Raphael the union president said truly there was no new increment of fees but they have increase fees systematically twice before his time. And the previous Student Union government did not do anything because the Government do give them peanut. He said different personalities in the state called him as he became the president yet he turned the invitations down because he was waiting for the student’s mandate. Now that they have given him their word he is expecting them to stand by him to fight for their rights. Raphael lament while express what one of his excos did; one of his excos connives or collaborates with some persons and want to the state commissioner of information and collected enormous amount of money. The students immediately rally against the betrayer and impeach him. They asked the president about the school management why they are exploiting students steadily. According to the president they attribute it to the State Government. `
The school management said they are not really in support of the increment of fees. The government is making things difficult for them. They have tried all the tactics they could to convince the government but all their efforts are to no avail. They said you are aware of the non academic strike is because of salary and allowances. For some month now the school is not running smoothly because the non academic is on strike. The school management have been calling the government to come to their aids yet the government hasn’t responded.

The student community is calling on State Government, their parents, Leaders of our dear State and country, and every other pressure/interest group such as Human Right International, market women, Nigerian Labour Congress, National Association of Students, Ijaw Youths Council, Izon Traditional Rulers, Izon National Council, Amnesty International to come for their aid. The fees in Niger Delta University are too high for them. They don’t have such huge amount of money to pay, compare to the present economic in the country. The sixty-six percent the management asked them to pay last academic session, some couldn’t meet up in time, because of the economical set-back. Now they said payment must be hundred percent. The students bewail; where are we going to get the money from.
Education is not a privilege but it is the right of a citizen. Jeopardising with education of the students (youths) is jeopardising with the future of the State or Country as the case may be. According to human right activist Martins Luther Jr, “our live begin to end the day we became silent about things that matters” and ”time is always right to do what is right” once again I call on the above mention bodies to come into this matter and investigate it critical. Please help the future because our future lays on our today.
